In Spring 1964 a
group of Orthodox Christians met with Fr John Nehrebecki,
Dean of the New Jersey Deanery, to discuss organization
of an English-speaking parish in rapidly growing
Morris County. From that moment things moved quickly.
Metropolitan Leonty gave his blessing for the group
to organize. A place for holy services was found
(First Memorial Presbyterian Church in Dover which
would be home to the parish for almost 4 years.),
the parish was incorporated, Fr Michael Karas assigned
as first rector, and in October that year the first
Divine Liturgy was celebrated. The community continued
to grow and develop with parish council, church
school, choir, and St Ann's Altar Guild becoming
integral groups within the parish.
In Fall of 1965 a
home and nearly five acres of land was purchased
in Randolph Township and by year-end, Fr George
Hasenecz was assigned rector continuing in that
capacity today. The community planned construction
of a church building and in August 1967, Metropolitan
Ireney conducted groundbreaking ceremonies. Church
construction began in November and building was
completed one year later. The first Liturgy was
celebrated on November 10, 1968 after a late Autumn
snowfall. In October 1969, Metropolitan Ireney,
Archbishop Kiprian of Pennsylvania and New Jersey
Deanery clergy participated in the consecration
of the Altar and blessing of the church.
In 1975, to meet
needs of the pastor's growing family, the congregation
decided to construct a rectory, and, after selling
the old rectory and small parcel of land, the new
rectory was built. Time passes quickly and soon
our unique and beautiful edifice was filled with
all neccesary ecclesiastical appointments. Holy
Trinity took its place among older established parishes
of the diocese. As the community expanded so did
organizations and senior and junior FROC chapters
were formed. In October 1987, final mortgage payments
was made and in January 1988, the first service
was held in what was to become Holy Spirit Mission
of Sussex County, an outgrowth of Holy Trinity.
With further growth
and maturity the parish expanded its ministry to
include an outreach program whereby assistance could
be offered to those in need. Collecting non-perishable
foods is an ongoing year-round project. While the
parish has always had an excellent church school
program, recently an in-home weekday adult discussion
group was formed in addition to the Sunday Adult
Group. Holy Trinity's sister parish is the Church
of All Saints in Akademgorodok, Novosibirsk and
recent contact was made through an individual who
visited there. Exchange of photos, videos, and letters
has taken place. We look forward to a special and
rewarding experience with our fellow Orthodox Christians.
December 1991 saw
the parish facing the monumental task of replacing
the church roof and in spite of obstacles this project
has been successfully completed. Another renovation
project which started in the summer of 1997 is the
construction of a new entrance to the church building
to eliminate the front stairs and make the buiding
accessable to all people. This project was completed
in the fall of 1997.
Through the efforts
of the choir and the generosity of parishioners,
four bells were purchased, with the largest being
blessed on Palm Sunday. The three remaining bells
are expected in the fall of 1998. All the bells
were forged in the Netherlands for Rostov Bells
of Framingham, MA. Each bell is decorated with an
icon.
The parish choir,
under the direction of Carol Wetmore, is in the
process of making a compact disc of liturgical music.
CDs and tapes are available by calling the church
office and leaving the necessary info.
Some of the recent
events happening in our parish are as follows: In
2001, the cupola and cross were installed over the
new entrance. The following year, the mural of "Our
Lady of the Sign" was installed on the wall
of the Sanctuary. On April 6, 2003, His Beatitude,
Metropolitan HERMAN visited the parish and bestowed
the Order of St Innocent on Fr George Hasenecz on
the occasions of his 40th anniversary to the Priesthood
and 38 years as Rector of Holy Trinity Church.
In 2004, the parish
celebrated its 40th Anniversary.
In the spring of
2005, a mural depicting the Psalmist King Davidm
St Roman the Melodist, St Cassiane and St John of
Damascus was installed on the choir wall.
December 18, 2005
will mark the 40th anniversary of the pastorate
of Archpriest George P. Hasenecz.
